Mounting and drivers
Apple native: read-only
macOS includes an NTFS driver that mounts volumes read-only. It needs no extension or administrator approval. NTFS Kit can discover volumes and mount them this way without macFUSE or NTFS-3G.
Apple’s driver cannot write, repair or create an NTFS filesystem. Treat a read-only mount as read-only; the app will not label it as write-capable.
macFUSE + NTFS-3G: read-write
The write path is a user-space filesystem:
| Component | Role |
|---|---|
| macFUSE | Kernel/system-extension bridge that lets a user-space filesystem serve a volume |
| NTFS-3G | The actual NTFS implementation, including ntfs-3g, ntfsfix and mkntfs |
Both must be installed and active. A version mismatch or a disabled system extension is reported as a capability gap, not as a successful mount.
One-click installation boundary
The installer follows a fixed sequence:
- Download macFUSE only from the official project DMG.
- Verify the release SHA-256 and the Developer ID signature before running it.
- Install through the macOS authorization prompt.
- Install NTFS-3G through Homebrew with the selected source.
- Report partial failure and re-check actual component presence.
The mirror setting applies only to that Homebrew invocation. It does not rewrite your shell profile, global Homebrew configuration or other projects.
Manual fallback
brew install --cask macfuse
brew install gromgit/fuse/ntfs-3g-macHomebrew is a prerequisite and is not installed automatically. Approve the system extension and restart when macOS asks.
Missing drivers
If macFUSE or NTFS-3G is missing, a read-write request stops before the current volume is unmounted. The app never silently falls back to a read-only mount and reports it as the requested operation.
Verification after mounting
- Read the new state back from
diskutil. - Check that the volume is mounted at the expected mount point.
- Check that the write capability is actually present; the UI reports writable state only after verification.
- If verification disagrees with the command result, the operation is a failure and the log records both outcomes.
Common failures
| Failure | Meaning | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| macFUSE installed, extension not approved | macOS is blocking the system extension | Approve it in Privacy & Security, restart |
| NTFS-3G missing | No write binary in the expected path | Install it through Homebrew |
| Volume busy | Finder or another process holds the mount | Close files/apps using the volume |
| Write mount succeeds but is read-only | Verification failed or the driver fell back | Do not write; check driver status and logs |
| macOS update disabled macFUSE | Extension needs re-approval | Re-check driver state before mounting |
Security boundary
Installing a filesystem driver changes the operating system’s storage stack. Only install signed releases from the official projects, review the authorization prompt, and keep backups. NTFS Kit does not bundle, patch or silently update third-party drivers.
